![]() Chemical Peel What is a chemical peel?? A chemical peel uses a chemical solution to improve and smooth the texture of the facial skin by removing its damaged outer layers. It is helpful for those individuals with facial blemishes, wrinkles and uneven skin pigmentation. How does a chemical peel work?? Once the chemical solution is applied to the skin, it causes the skin to blister and eventually peel off. The new regenerated skin is usually smoother and less wrinkled than the old skin. There are several different formulas that can be used depending on each patient’s needs. These formulas range in strength. What do I need to do to prepare for a chemical peel?? Some patients may need to stop the use of certain drugs and creams several days to weeks before the scheduled treatment. Topical pre-conditioning medications may also be prescribed in an effort to prepare the skin prior to treatment. These types of treatments thin out the skin’s surface layer, allowing the chemical solution to penetrate more deeply and evenly. What should I expect after a chemical peel?? Depending on the type of peel, a reaction similar to a sunburn will occur. Superficial peeling usually involves redness, followed by scaling that ends within three to seven days. Stronger chemical solutions may result in swelling and the presence of water blisters that may break, crust and peel off over a period of seven to 14 days. Some peels may require bandages to be placed on part or all of the skin that is treated. A mild pain medication may be prescribed to relieve any tingling or throbbing you may feel. It is important to avoid sun exposure after a chemical peel since the new skin is fragile and more susceptible to complications. How long will the results of a chemical peel last?? The results of a chemical peel vary depending on the strength of the solution. While the treatment is permanent, it will not prevent the aging process. How do I know if I am a candidate
