Blepharoplasty (eyelid surgery)

What is blepharoplasty? Blepharoplasty, or eyelid surgery, is a procedure for either upper or lower eyelids. It can correct droopy upper eyelids or puffiness /bags under the eyes. Eyelid surgery cannot correct crowsfeet or other wrinkles, eliminate dark circles or lift sagging brows.

How is blepharoplasty performed? Eyelid surgery corrects droopy upper eyelids by removing excess tissue, fat and or muscle from the upper and lower eyelids. For upper eyelids, the incisions are made following the natural creases. The surgeon separates the skin from the underlying fatty tissue and muscle, removes fat and trims the muscle and skin. Incisions are closed using sutures that are removed in about one week. Lower eyelid surgery involves incisions that are made inside of the lower eyelid. The surgeon will remove the pocket of fat through this incision. There are no sutures to remove with lower eyelid surgery.

What can I expect during the procedure? Your eyelid surgery will be performed in either an outpatient surgery center or in the office. If it is performed in the surgery center, you will be given intravenous (IV) sedation to help you relax along with a local anesthetic. Although you will not be under general anesthesia, you will be sedated and comfortable. If your surgery is performed in the office, you will be given something by mouth to help you relax, and a local anesthetic will be used. You will be awake and alert during the procedure. Surgery for upper or lower eyelids takes from 30-60 minutes. If both upper and lower eyelids are done, your surgery will take from 60-90 minutes.

What are some possible side effects of Blepharoplasty? Some minor complications that can occur after blepharoplasty include blurred vision for a few days, temporary swelling and/or bruising, and slight asymmetry in healing or scarring. Occasionally, some patients have difficulty closing their eyes. While this is usually a temporary complication, it can in very rare cases, be permanent.
